Fall is upon us, and with the start of the season, it isn’t just pumpkin decor, hot apple cider, and the holidays that we have to look forward to. We also enjoy this time for the clothing we get to wear during it: soft sweaters, our favorite jeans, cozy sweats, and fun jackets, to name a few, all of which you can find in our new fall collection

As you begin to transition your closet from summer to autumn, you might find you need a few items to round out your wardrobe, and you may not even know you need them yet. That is why we put together a list of fall wardrobe essentials. From tops and bottoms to dresses and jackets, these are the pieces all women should have in their wardrobe this season.

Think of this list as a capsule collection. Once you have every piece, you can create a great fall outfit by pairing different pieces together. That doesn’t mean you need to go out and purchase a whole new wardrobe, though. In fact, you probably already own more than a few of the items on this list, and by styling them with the additional items we recommend, those old favorites will feel brand new.

Without further, adieu, here are the fall wardrobe essentials you need...

Tops

A Neutral Sweater

So, wondering how to style sweaters? A neutral sweater, such as this one (also available in plus here), will likely be the piece you reach for over and over again this fall. It looks chic and sophisticated all on its own, and it’s also one of the easiest pieces to wear under a fun printed coat or with a colorful scarf.

“Neutral” doesn’t mean just brown or tan; it can be any shade that goes well with your skin tone and the rest of the pieces in your closet. This particular sweater comes in light grey, dark grey, navy, espresso, and sand. Choose the hue that works for you and for the outfits you want to create, and it will get plenty of use.

A Back-to-Work Blouse

The work tops currently hanging in your closet may have seen one too many zoom sessions. So, put a pep in your step as you re-enter the office setting with a fresh fall blouse. Whether you’re returning to the office this fall, or you’ve already made the transition, embrace the change in season with a beautiful printed blouse that has unique design details, such as this one or this one. Both of these will go well with any black or navy work pants you already have and can be layered with any cardigan, but the overall look will feel brand new.

A Layered Top

One of the fresh trends for fall is shirts in mixed fabrics that appear as two separate pieces simply layered together, such as a crisp white button-down and a classic cozy sweater. We think this trend is polished, pretty, and here to stay, so it deserves an essential spot in your closet.

This layered sweater is the perfect piece to take it. Wear it any day of the week, dressed up with tailored pants and heeled leather boots, or dressed down with jeans and sneakers. If you already have a white button-down and grey sweater on hand, try layering them to achieve a similar look.

A Fitted Turtleneck

Fall is all about layers (see the item above), so it’s essential to have some basic layering pieces in your drawers. Basics such as fitted tees, tanks, and turtlenecks will come in handy when you want to add an extra layer of warmth, but they also go well with everything: silk skirts, tweed jackets, denim jeans, etc.

You name it, a basic, solid-colored, fitted top is all you need to form a complete outfit. We suggest this fitted turtleneck top for fall, but it will carry you into winter as well. The ultra-soft brushed knit fabric is all you’ll want close to your skin in the coming seasons.

A Graphic Tee

Looking for something that you can easily match with your casual fall outfit ideas? A graphic tee is a fun and easy-to-wear item that can be dressed up or down, giving you the ability to create numerous fall outfits with one single piece. You can wear it casually with leggings or jeans, or dress it up with a midi skirt for a trendy pairing.

Wear it under a leather jacket for an edgy look that can take you to dinner, or under a jean jacket when you’re running errands. The options are endless. If you’re convinced, add this western option to your drawer. With the western trend becoming more and more popular, you will feel modern and comfortable at the same time.

Bottoms

Dressy Joggers

We all have sweats we wore all season long last fall… and winter… and spring, so it’s probably time to get an upgrade. Put a twist on the comfy trend by investing in a pair of joggers that are just as chic as they are soft. These crepe joggers have made our list of fall wardrobe essentials for that very reason. You will still feel at home in them, but you’ll also feel great in them when you’re going out, especially when wearing them with the matching puff-sleeve top. But you can wear them with a plain white tee or your fitted turtleneck as well.

Dark Wash Jeans

It should come as no surprise that dark wash jeans are an essential wardrobe item for fall. We tend to wear them so often throughout the season that we need a fresh pair each year. This year, the chosen pair are these great pair of vintage wash jeggings, because we’ve adapted far too well to only wearing sweatpants that a no-stretch pair of jeans simply won’t do.

Thankfully, these jeggings have just the right amount of stretch for comfortable wear that doesn’t lose its shape. Pair them with your favorite sweaters, graphic tees, and coats for countless easy and effortless outfits. They’ll also go well with various shoe styles, from combat boots and sneakers to suede booties.

Fresh Leggings

Another item in our drawer that could use some refreshing? Our leggings. Whether or not you prefer joggers these days, there will be many times where you still reach for a tried and true pair of black leggings, and you’re more likely to when their color is still jet black, and their fabric is still free from pills. So, pick up this pair so you’ll be at the ready to pull them to wear with your favorite oversized sweater or sweatshirt.

Black Jeans

Your fall jean collection is not complete this year without a pair of straight jeans or black jeans. Kill two birds with one stone by shopping for these classic black jeans, which have a flattering straight silhouette and mid-rise. They can be worn to work, to dinner and a show, or to watch your son’s football game next Friday night. That’s the beauty of black jeans: they’re incredibly versatile. And that’s why they’re a fall wardrobe staple.

Dresses

A Shirt Dress

Choosing clothes for fall fashion can be difficult as the weather can seem to change on a dime throughout the day. A boho long sleeve dress is a great piece to have on hand to help you master the seasonal transition. It provides coverage and comfort while being lightweight and easy to layer. Plus, it can be paired with ballet flats while the weather is still warm and an ankle boot when it gets chilly. Consider this python printed option, which will make any look feel instantly more fun and trend-forward.

A Little Black Dress

When in-person events resume this fall and holiday season, you will be glad you snagged a little black dress, perfect for any occasion. This bell-sleeved number is just the sleek, eye-catching option you’ll want to reach for when that formal function rolls around. For those looking for plus size outfit ideas, this ¾ sleeve cascade wrap dress is the winning LBD.

Jackets

A Statement Jacket

Whether it’s cropped and boxy, or full-length and leopard, a statement jacket is essential for fall. It’s an easy way to turn jeans and a t-shirt, or jeans and a long sleeve sweater into a lively new look. Take this leopard-print blazer, for instance. It can be worn over a little black dress, with a pleated skirt and tank, or belted jeans and a graphic tee. Any way you style it, it will steal the show and give you incredible confidence that only a great blazer and animal print can give.

An Overcoat

This may seem more like a winter piece, but if you live anywhere where it drops below 60 degrees in the fall, even if only at night, stock your closet with an overcoat now and get the most wear out of it for the next few seasons.

An overcoat, whether it’s thick and plaid-printed or more like a long, thick cardigan, will add instant polish to any look, regardless of what you’re wearing underneath. We love this one for its plush, textured fabric, its versatile length, and its creamy oatmeal color that can go over anything.
